Frequently Asked Questions

  • Material inclusion varies by course level. In Stage 1 of the Introduction to Jewellery Making course, all materials and equipment are provided for students. Stage 2 students pay for silver based on weight used. The Stacker Rings workshop includes silver in the workshop cost. Most beginner courses provide base metals and strips of silver, with some courses charging a consumable fee (typically $30.00) for additional materials. Specific material inclusions depend on the individual course selected.

  • Course durations vary significantly. Introduction to Jewellery Making Stages 1-3 are five-week courses with 3.5-hour weekly classes costing $513.00 each. Evening courses like 'Learn to Make Jewellery' run for 8 weeks (20 hours) at $595, while the Jewellery Taster workshop is a single 3-hour session costing $220. Multi-day intensive workshops range from one day to four days. The Jewellery Summer School for Beginners is a 3-day program, and wax carving workshops typically span 2-4 days.

  • Beginner courses cover foundational metalsmithing techniques including: saw piercing and metal cutting using professional jewellery saw frames; soldering using jewellery torches and annealing; filing and finishing; ring sizing; texturing and stamping with various hammers and letter stamps; roller printing (pressing textured materials into metal surfaces); oxidisation for surface finishing; and polishing. Advanced techniques like gem setting, wax carving, and lost wax casting are introduced in intermediate and specialist workshops.

  • No previous experience is required for beginner courses. Classes explicitly state 'no formal entry requirements' and 'no experience necessary.' The Jewellery Taster and Introduction to Jewellery Making courses are designed for absolute beginners. However, some advanced courses like the Gypsy Setting workshop and Stages 4-9 of the Introduction series require intermediate-level skills or completion of prerequisite courses. Always check individual course prerequisites before enrolling.

  • Course outcomes depend on the program level. Beginners typically create rings (cabochon gem-set rings, textured rings, stacked rings), earrings, and bangles. The Taster workshop produces a single sterling silver ring in one 3-hour session. Introduction Stage 1 students make a cabochon gem-set silver ring and sample pieces. Intermediate and advanced students progress to linked toggle bracelets, domed pierced pendants, collet rings with facetted gems, and custom-designed pieces. Specialist courses enable students to make wax-carved pieces, resin jewellery, polymer clay necklaces, and gemstone malas.

  • Classes maintain small group sizes to ensure quality instruction. Maximum class sizes range from 7-10 students in most courses, with some workshops capped at 8 or 12 participants. The 'Learn to Make Jewellery' course has a maximum of 10 people, the Jewellery Taster has a maximum of 7 people, and the Daytime Jewellery Making Atelier accommodates small groups for personalized guidance. Smaller class sizes enable instructors to provide individual feedback and hands-on support to each student.
